The House

Will & Nellie Kramer built a big white house at 430 Dayton, Wichita, Kansas.

Will did much of the work himself.  The southwest corner of the house always leaned because there was a big windstorm while they were building.  The storm blew the timbers a little to the side.  The only way you would notice was to set a ball or marble on the floor in the upstairs bedroom by that corner. The ball would begin to roll by itself.

During the Great Depression, the house was full of people.  Nellie and Will had the east upstairs bedroom (on the right),  Ruth, Elaine, and Bill had the west upstairs bedroom, Mabel & Fred had the east bedroom on the main floor, and Betty had the little bedroom on the main floor.

This photo was taken from the top of the dairy.
Downtown Wichita can be seen in the background.

When it was first built, the house was "the showplace of Wichita"
Grandma Kramer had this colorized photo handing in her bedroom.

Grandpa Will Kramer walking on "the circle" driveway at his home.  The spot on the left with no curb was originally a driveway leading to the dairy.  The open field to the left is now West High School.

"The back door" on the east side of the house.  This is the door we always used.
About 6 steps went up to the main floor.  These were the steps Nellie Kramer fell down in 1966.  She broke her hip and left the house one last time.  The hip healed, but her heart gave out and she died in Wesley Hospital in Wichita, KS 8 Aug 1966.
